We are happy with our stay at the Akademicheskaya Hotel as the quality of accommodation was commensurate with the price to judge by Moscow standards. The hotel is close enough to the centre, to the metro, and to Gorky Park and the wonderful New Tretyakov Gallery, which everyone should visit if they stay here. There is one problem - to find the hotel first time if you come by metro is not simple, as you must use the system of subways beneath the highway. After the first time, this gets easier, however.

I stayed in this hotel for a conference last month. All in all, not a bad experience, although the Akademicheskaya definitely has an institutional feel to it both in the attitude of the staff (not rude per say, but not trying very hard either) and in a few interesting quirks in the building. There are only three lifts, which means that in the mornings you can end up waiting for ages just to get down to breakfast (over ten minutes on two occasions) and the top floors also have very sporadic hot water supply. Otherwise, everything was fine and the prices didn't seem to be extortionate.
