As well as the two main branches of the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow's premier museum of Russian art, Zamoskvoreche, the district around the Alrosa Na Kazachyem Hotel, is rich in historic churches. Among the finest are the splendid Church of St. John the Warrior (48, Bolshaya Yakimanka), built to honor Peter the Great's victory over the Swedes at Poltava in 1709, and the older and equally charming Church of St. Grigory the Neocaesarean (29a, Bolshaya Polyanka), undoubtedly one of Moscow's most beautiful churches.
The Ostrovsky Estate Museum at 9, Ulitsa Malaya Ordynka, commemorated the great 19th century dramatist Alexander Ostrovsky and also has a good collection of historic paintings and engravings showing the Zamoskvoreche district as it was in his lifetime.
