The major attraction in the Zamoskvorechye district is the Tretyakov Gallery, which can be reached on foot from the Alrosa Na Kazachyem in approximately 15 minutes. For most visitors, Russian art is a closed book until the explosion of Russian artists into the European avant-garde during the 1910s and 1920s. The Tretyakov is a beautifully organized and presented collection that allows visitors to follow the progress of Russian painting from medieval icon-painting (of which the gallery has one of the finest collections in the world), through the rather derivative work of the Imperial period, and on to the first flowering of modern Russian art that the socially conscious national revival of the late 19th century produces.
The Tretyakov's superb 20th century collection is now housed separately, but a visit the Old Tretyakov, with its beautiful premises and excellent exhibition information (all translated into English) should not be missed.
Among the many historic churches in the district, the closest to the Alrosa Na Kazachyem is the Church of the Iberian Icon of the Mother of God in Vyspole, under five minutes' walk from the hotel. Completed in 1802, this pink-and-white has a very simple neoclassical design. A few hundred meters further up the street stands the Church of the Blessed Nikolai in Pyzhki is more likely to attract visitors' interest. Dating back to 1672, it features five gilded cuppolas and an intricate layered structure.
