The Golden Apple is within walking distance or a short metro ride of nearly all Moscow's major visitor attractions, including the Kremlin, Red Square, and the Tretyakov Gallery. In the immediate vicinity of the hotel, visitors should pay attention to the 17th century Church of the Nativity of Our Lady in Putinki, with its distinctive azure onion domes, at the southern end of Malaya Dmitrovka Ulitsa.
Beyond the church, Pushkinskaya Ploshchad on the Boulevard Ring is an attractive green square with a popular statue of Russia's favourite poet and Moscow's first Mcdonalds (once the largest in the world). At the top of Ulitsa Petrovka, running south from the Boulevard Ring, is the Verkhopetrovskiy Monastery, one of Moscow's oldest and still active, which has survived almost unaltered since the 17th century. Across the road from the monastery is the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, which has an excellent collection of avant garde Russian art from the 1910s and 1920s, as well as an idiosyncratic international collection and interesting contemporary exhibitions.
Just east of the Golden Apple on Karetnyy Ryad, the Hermitage Garden is an attractive historic green space with several summer cafes. A little further north across the Garden Ring on Delegatskaya Ulitsa (300m from the hotel) is the Museum of Applied and Folk Art, a traditional but absorbing museum with displays of laquer boxes and antique toys.
