We booked this hotel at the last minute and did not know what to expect. I have stayed in Moscow many times before at other hotels and for me the Sovietsky offers best prices. Maybe there are some things which are not really four-star in the hotel, and much of the fittings is very old, but you still get a real sense of luxury from the beautiful lobby spaces and nice things like complimentary champagne and piano music in the lobby.

Stayed here for two nights last month and had a wonderful time. For people on their first trip to Moscow, maybe the Sovietsky is a little too far from the centre, and the hotel does lack some facilities and comforts. What it does have, though, is loads and loads of atmosphere. The foyer is spectacular, and the room had a real sense of history, too. One useful thing to know is that to get to the centre (Red Square), you don't have to walk all the way to the metro - there's a trolleybus that stops across the road from the entrance that will take you there in less than 30 minutes.

Historical Hotel Sovietsky
What a grand hotel this is, superb service, large rooms, all the amenities you can ask for and all with a touch of old world Russia - would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to singles, couples and business travelers.LARRY KRISIK
