The main attraction in the immediate vicinity of the Holiday Inn Moscow Sokolniki is Sokolniki Park, which is only about 200m from the main entrance to the hotel. This rambling park was once royal hunting ground, first established by Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, a keen falconer ("sokol" is the Russian for falcon), and then landscaped during the reign of his son, Peter the Great. In 1931, the park was reopened as Moscow's second "park of culture and leisure", designed to provide an official playground for the proletariat. Entertainments still in evidence include a rather decrepit funfair, an open-air skating rink in the winter, and a bandstand with ballroom dancing that is popular with pensioners.
