The Mandarin Hotel offers fast metro access to Moscow's main visitor attractions, with the Kremlin and Red Square only a little over 20 minutes door-to-door from the hotel. The area immediately around the hotel, while containing many historic buildings, is not likely to be of much interest to most visitors.
The exception, only ten minutes' walk from the Mandarin Hotel, is the Epiphany Cathedral at Yelokhovo. Built 1837-1845 (on the site of an earlier church where Alexander Pushkin was baptized), this magnificent Empire-style cathedral rose to prominence in the Soviet period as the home church of the Patriarchs – principally because it was the largest church to survive the Bolsheviks' closures. As such, it is one of very few historic churches to have survived the 20th century intact, and its lavish interiors are particularly noteworthy.
