The Marriott Tverskaya Hotel is located on the northern stretch of Tverskaya Ulitsa, Moscow's main central thoroughfare and part of the historic highway running north from the Kremlin to the ancient city of Tver and on to St. Petersburg. While Moscow's main sites and attractions are clustered close to the Kremlin at the other end of the street, there are a few landmarks of intereste a short walk from the hotel.
The church that you pass when walking to the Marriott Tverskaya from Belarus Station is the Church of St. Nicholas at the Tver Gate. Styled in the manner of a traditional Russian church, it was in fact only consecrated in 1921 and is mainly of interest as one of the most important churches of the Old Believers sect in Moscow. Belarus Railway Station is itself something of a landmark. Its current guise dates back to 1912 and was designed by Ivan Strukov, combining elements of Russian Revival and Style Moderne architecture.
The Marriott is situated just a few minutes’ walk from Mayakovskaya Metro Station, dedicated to the Futurist poet and enthusiastic supporter of the Bolsheviks, Vladimir Mayakovsky. Built in 1938, the station lies just a few steps from the former Mayakovsky Square (now Triumfalnaya Ploshchad), which centers round an impressively rugged statue of the Soviet hero, whose tragic suicide in 1930 prompted Stalin to exalt him as the most talented poet of the Soviet epoch. Also on the square, guests can find the imposing pillared facade of the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, home to the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra and one of the leading venues for classical music concerts in the city.
