Really liked the Zarya, even though it is some way from the downtown. Friendly girls at reception, a comfortable, clean room, and really good food in the restaurant. This is fortuitous, as there is not much else around the hotel for evening dining. In fact, there seems to be half-board option available, which I would recommend investigating. The set-menu dinner was not expensive by Moscow standards (about $20), and was very good both times I had it.

This is the hotel I always head for when I come to Moscow on business, and I'll tell you why. The distance from the centre and the walk from the metro may be further than ideal, but that's more than made up for by the extremely helpful and friendly staff, the like of which I've seen nowhere else in Moscow, certainly not in a 3-star hotel. Breakfast is also pretty good, and they have free WiFi, although it's a little temperamental. My advice is to take your laptop down to the cozy bar, where it works fine.
