The Sretenskaya Hotel enjoys a superb location in Moscow’s historic center. The immediate area surrounding the hotel dates predominately ffrom the 18th and 19th centuries, and includes several interesting religious buildings. The hotel is just 150 meters north of the Boulevard Ring, a series of leafy boulevards that marks the historic borders of the city.
The biggest visitor attraction in the neighborhood is the Nikulin Circus on Tsvetnoy Bulvar, the most famous circus in Moscow. This circus was opened in 1880 and for much of the 20th century it served as the only circus in Moscow. Awarded the Order of Lenin in 1939, this circus has featured many prominent performers, including the great clown and comic actor Yury Nikulin, and remains the most popular circus in the city.
At either end of Ulitsa Sretenka stand two historic churches. Opposite Sukharevskaya Metro Station to the north of the hotel is the Church of the Trinity, a late 17th-century church that was once the regimental church for a regiment of streltsy guardsmen. Dating from the same era, but architecturally very different, is the Church of the Assumption in Pechatniki, a typical example of the Moscow style known as Naryshkin Baroque. A more famous example of the style can be fournd a short distance east along the Boulevard Ring - the lovely Church of the Archangel Gabriel. The church, also referred to as the Menshikov Tower, was originally built in 1657 and was once the highest building in Moscow, but had to be rebuilt multiple times throughout history due to damage and destruction. The current church structure was completed in 1863.
