The Ulanskaya Hotel is located in one of, for me, the best parts of central Moscow. The surroundings are quiet and safe, and it is a charming 30-minute walk down to Red Square. Wandering round Chistye Prudy, which are 10 minutes from the Ulanskaya, is a nice way to spend a summer evening, and there are several good bars near. Menshikov's Tower is also a beautiful building not every tourist will see. The hotel is fine, too. The best I find in central Moscow so far.

It's strange that the restaurant menu is only in Russian, as if foreign guests are not welcome. That and the quite high rates are the only things to complain about at the Ulanskaya, which is otherwise a very nice little hotel. Service was efficient and helpful (although not all of them speak English, but their attitude is great). The room was small, simple, and comfortable. Vegetarian alert: The best veggie food we found in Moscow was at a cafe called Avocado, about ten minutes' walk from the hotel next to the Chistie Prudi.
